Janelle Monáe Declares Herself A “Queer Black Woman In America” In Powerful Rolling Stone Interview
In the past, the artist had only alluded to her queer identity. “I only date androids” became her well-known response to any prying on the matter. In this candid interview, she made it clear that not only is she done hiding that part of herself, she plans on continuing to put themes of sexual fluidity and empowerment into her work so that others within the LGBT community can feel seen and heard.
“Being a queer black woman in America — someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker,” she said in the interview.
