Here’s a new protest against Quebec’s Bill 62*. Its being planned for October 24th, 2017 at McGill University in Montreal.

If you are a student at McGill University, then Bill 62—a new law that bans face coverings for anyone who offers or receives public services in Quebec—affects you. The law unjustly targets a minority religious group and will only lead to discrimination, unconstitutional human rights violations, and a hostile climate in Quebec.

In defense of the law, Quebec’s Minister of Justice, Stephanie Vallée, has said that the law is not targeted at women who wear niqabs or burkas, since it will also affect people receiving public services (such as attending classes at McGill!) who are wearing scarves, bandanas, or sunglasses. However, this law is undeniably the targeting of a minority group.

Si vous étudiez à l'Université McGill, la Loi 62 vous affecte. Il s'agit d'une nouvelle loi qui interdit d'offrir ou recevoir un service public à visage découvert au Québec. Elle vise injustement un groupe religieux minoritaire et mène à de la discrimination, des violations inconstitutionnelles aux droits de la personne et un climat hostile au Québec.

La ministre de la Justice du Québec, Stéphanie Vallée, défend la loi en affirmant qu'elle ne vise pas spécifiquement les femmes portant le niqab ou la burka, puisqu'elle affecte aussi les personnes qui reçoivent des services publics (comme assister à un cours à McGill!) en portant un foulard, un bandana ou des lunettes de soleil. Néanmoins, cette loi cible bel et bien un groupe minoritaire.
